China's tax agent industry embraces AI, but warns against chasing hype

The China Certified Tax Agents Association has launched a national competition on applying AI to tax-related professional services, open to member firms, aiming to deepen AI adoption in the sector. The association had already issued guidance mapping 16 application scenarios, and the tax administration's 2026 service campaign calls for piloting tax large models and smart consultation. Practitioners say routine bookkeeping, accounting and filing will be automated, but compliance judgement and professional experience remain hard for AI to replace, and firms must guard against AI hallucinations and data-security risks.

The China Certified Tax Agents Association has launched a national competition on using AI in tax-related professional services, open to member firms, with the aim of getting AI tools genuinely adopted in the sector. The association had already issued guidance listing more than a dozen application scenarios, and in March the State Taxation Administration said it would explore building a tax AI large model and pilot smart consultation in selected areas. Industry views converge: routine bookkeeping, accounting and filing will eventually be automated, but compliance judgement rooted in business logic, cross-department communication and tax compliance planning are not something AI can replace any time soon. Several industry leaders interviewed cautioned against chasing hype: firms should guard against fabricated model output and make data protection solid so that practice data stays controllable and reliable.
